They are on the way back and somehow the whole painting exudes the complacent and saturated fatigue of the sheep. The hazy light, the luscious brown and green of the soil and the nearly bald poplars create a late autumnal atmosphere. The muddy under fur of the sheep that only show the distinctive white on their backs emphasizes this impression. The unsettled sky is painted in such an impasto way that one can nearly sense the humidity of the heavy clouds. The same applies to the dark soil and even the roofs of the buildings seem to shimmer with moisture. Thanks to their immanent glance, the used oil colours are the perfect choice for depicting this autumnal landscape. The visible paint brushes and the thickly applied layers of paint enhance this atmosphere. The canvas has visible flaking in the lower half. The frame is in very good condition. The dimensions including the frame are 70.5 x 60.5 cm and the dimensions of the canvas are 50 x 40 cm. The painting is signed in the lower left "H. Liesegang". Helmuth Liesegang (1858-1945) Lisegang grew up in Kleve, a small city in the Lower Rhine area, from where he very soon started to visit the Academy in Düsseldorf. When he finished his studies, he started travelling and went to Belgium, the Netherlands and Paris where he got to know many important painters such as Max Liebermann. He returned to his home area and the nature of the Lower Rhine region became his most important subject. He fled the bombardments during the war and went to Leipzig where he died in 1945, named a professor beforehand. He has been awarded many prices and honours during his lifetime and is nowadays known as one of the most important representative of the Düsseldorfer Malerschule.
