Oil on fibreboard Germany, 1970/80s Franz Hitzler (b. 1946) - German painter, graphic artist, sculptor and ceramist Signed with black felt tip on verso 'Hitzler' Dimensions: 133 x 89 cm Good condition Franz Hitzler is one of the leading representatives of the German avant-garde after 1945; the auction record for one of his paintings currently sets at around €7,600 Franz Hitzler creates gestural and highly expressive compositions that usually react on spontaneous inner feelings or deal with existential fears. The present painting shows a yellow figure with blazing red hair, surrounded by a purgatory of colors and a veil of pure black. It is a typical motif of the artist who follows the stylistic and formal tradition of 'Art brut'. In this context Hitzler is closely related to the groups COBRA or SPUR, whose famous representatives were painters like Karel Appel, Asger Jorn and Helmut Sturm. The painting is verso signed with black felt tip 'Hitzler'. It is in good condition; the paint surface is only affected by scattered areas of craquelure. The painting is framed by a simple black painted frame. The framed overall dimensions are 133 x 89 cm. Franz Hitzler (b. 1946) Born and grown up in the Upper Palatinate, Franz Hitzler studied at the Art Academy in Augsburg from 1962 to 1964. He continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1967 to 1972, where he became a master student of Franz Nagel (1907-1976). In the 1970s/80s Hitzler made a number of study trips through different countries, including Egypt, Italy, France and Tunisia. Since 1997, the award-winning artist is a member of the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste in Munich. His multifaceted oeuvre includes paintings and other techniques such as sculpture, collage, drawing and graphic works. Hitzler is deeply inspired by 'Art brut', but continuously develops new approaches such as the play with complementary and simultaneous contrasts. Examples of his works are preserved at the MoMA in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Vienna and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The artist lives and works in Munich.
