The current highest auction record for a painting by Kerkovius is more than €60,000 The Bauhaus student Ida Kerkovius (1879-1970) mainly addressed herself to abstract and non-objective paintings that were especially influenced by her teacher Adolf Hölzel. Hölzel was one of the leading pioneers of abstraction and trained Kerkovius in a 'flat style of painting'. The present pastel most likely dates from around 1960, whenthe artist increasingly dedicated herself to the pastel painting. The pastel is signed with 'Ida Kerkovius' to the lower margin. It is in very good condition, showing minor wear. The frame shows some minor nicks. The dimensions are 74.5 x 54.5 cm, and the frame measures 63.5 x 84 cm. Ida Kerkovius (1879-1970) Born in Riga, Ida Kerkovius first trained at a private painting and drawing school in her hometown. In 1903, she studied as a student of Adolf Hölzel in the artists' colony in Dachau for five months. In 1908, she studied at the private art school of Adolf Mayer in Berlin and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart as a master student of Adolf Hölzel. From 1920 to 1923, the artist spent the winter semesters at the Bauhaus in Weimar and studied with Johannes Itten, Georg Muche, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee and other well-known artists. In the Third Reich, her work was classified as 'degenerate'. A big part of her oeuvre from the period before 1945 has been destroyed by a bomb attack.
