Retrospektive, Museum Ostdeutsche Galerie Regensburg 2001, p. 24; Leonhard, Kurt: Ida Kerkovius - Leben und Werk, Köln 1967, p. 92, plate 31 Dimensions: 102.5 x 71.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: From the estate of the artist Bright abstract-figurative composition by Ida Kerkovius. The current highest auction record for a painting by Kerkovius is more than €60,000 The present work by Ida Kerkovius (1879-1970) is a draft of the left panel of her oil painting 'Triptychon', dated 1965. On the left, there is a portrait of a blond-haired, pale pink kneeling woman with a big eye, which is approached by a feline 'demon' from the right. The mostly large-scale figure paintings occupy the smallest part in the artist's oeuvre and are therefore very impressive. The critic Kurt Leonhard has described the 'Triptychon' as outstanding and ascribed it a religious significance as well as the quintessence of Kerkovius' artistic creation. The work is all round matted and mounted in a partly gilt wooden frame. It is in good condition with light sign of wear. The frame shows some losses. The sheet dimensions are 102.5 x 71.5 cm, and the frame measures 131 x 100 cm. Ida Kerkovius (1879-1970) Born in Riga, Ida Kerkovius first trained at a private painting and drawing school in her hometown. In 1903, she studied as a student of Adolf Hölzel in the artistic colony in Dachau for five months. In 1908, she studied at the private art school of Adolf Mayer in Berlin and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart as a master student of Adolf Hölzel. From 1920 to 1923, the artist spent the winter semesters at the Bauhaus in Weimar and studied with Johannes Itten, Georg Muche, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee and other well-known artists. Her work was classified as 'degenerate' during the Third Reich and a big part of her oeuvre from the period before 1945 has been destroyed by a bomb attack.
