John Arthur Lomax (Manchester 1857-1923) Oil on canvas ' The Story of the Elopement ' A couple tell the new Father-in-law ( who holds a hunting whip) their tale of elopement in an Inn while other figures listen sat in front of a fire. Signed lower right 34 1/2 x 50 1/2" Lomax was known for a series of paintings illustrating the before and after of married life. This painting was turned into a popular print, two of which now now hang in the National Trust properties of Lanhydrock, Cornwall and Erddig , Wrexham. It is not now,nor ever has been re-lined!
