Circle of Francesco Solimena (1657-1747) 'Rebecca at the Well, with other Figures Nearby and Hills Beyond', oil on canvas, 77.5cm x 60cm, ** This celebrated composition by Solimena in the, Galleria dell'Accademia in Venice, is a composition and subject the Artist often repeated, the Venice Picture formed a pendant to, ''Jacob and Rachel,'' which was executed in the early 1700's, when the Artist was drawing on both the Tenebrist influences and Classical tendencies, to produce compositions with sparkling tonality on a monumental scale. As Federico Bologna noted in his key work on Solimena in 1958, this particular composition was one of his most successful and popular, being copied numerous times by both the Artist himself, and his studio and by later unknown hands.
