O. Götz is one of the most important representatives of the artist group ZERO. Only recently, on the occasion of the artist's 100th birthday, the Neue Nationalgalerie organized an extensive K. O. Götz retrospective in Berlin The present gouache is a work of the well-known German artist K. O. Götz and dates back to 1985. It is an expressive gestural painting which has been executed with the artist's typical raking technique. Almost accidentally, the artist had discovered that the use of a rake was very suitable for applying a mixture of color and paste onto the surface of a canvas or paper. He was fascinated by the informal structures that occurred through the execution of fast sweeping turns which corresponded exactly with his ideas of contemporary, abstract art. Hence, he decided to continue with this specific painting technique and gained particular international fame for his characteristic paintings and gouaches. The work is in very good overall condition. It is framed in a passe-partout behind glass. It is signed lower right "K. O. Götz". Verso, it is additionally signed, dated and titled "K. O. Götz 1958 'FOSS'", as well as stamped "Sammlung Rissa Götz". The wooden frame is colored in black and gold and shows slight traces of use. The framed work measures 101 x 86 cm. The paper measures 64.5 x 49.5 cm. Karl Otto Götz (born 1914) Karl Otto Götz, also known also as K.O. Götz, was born in Aachen in 1914 and is considered as the main representative of the German abstract and Informel art. Götz attended the arts college in Aachen and occupied there primarily with the avant-garde painting. His early work was characterized by Expressionism and Surrealism, and was influenced by works of Max Ernst, Juan Gris, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. In the 1950s he increasingly began with the dissolution of forms and figures. Two years later he began to produce works in an Informel style and mixed technique, which made him internationally the most important representative of the Informel and action painting. In his late creative period he is concerned with historical events, which he implements in his typical style of painting.
