Watercolor and mixed media on paper Venice, Italy, circa 1929 Paul Kuhfuss (1883-1960) - German portrait, genre and landscape painter Signed lower right 'Kuhfuss' Catalogue raisonné number: 29/21 with illustration Overall dimensions framed: 103.5 x 89.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Private Collection Lower Saxony Paintings by Kuhfuss from the pre-war period are highly sought after by collectors; works from his Italian phase fetch over 10,000 Euros at international auctions The present watercolor by Paul Kuhfuss (1883-1960) depicts the Piazzetta San Marco between the Doge's Palace, the Biblioteca Marciana and the lagoon with the two towering monolith columns in a stage-like composition seen from above. The island of San Giorgio with its church and Benedictine monastery can be seen in the background. Kuhfuss always had a strong interest in theater and scenography. From 1949 to 1954 he was head of the class for stage and costume design at the technical college for textiles in Berlin. With free brush stokes Kuhfuss has created a beautiful view of Venice in balanced colors. The paper appears in a good overall condition with some tiny pinholes along the margins. It is mounted on cardboard at two spots at the upper margin. Two creases (one backed with paper on the reverse) are visible in the lower left area. Here there is also a tear (approx. 4.5 cm) and two smaller tears (approx. 5 mm) to the upper left margin. There is a further tear to the lower right corner, also backed with paper on the reverse. The frame shows minor wear. The framed work measures 103.5 x 89.5 cm, the sheet size is 60.2 x 74.6 cm. Paul Kuhfuss (1883-1960) Paul Kuhfuss started an apprenticeship as a drawing teacher at the Royal Art School Berlin before studying landscape painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1905 onwards. After graduating from university, he was active as a professor at the Academy. A large number of his works are listed in the Paul-Kuhfuss-Archive. He took part in exhibitions of the Free Secession, the Berlin Secession, the German Art Association, the Union of Fine Artists of the GDR, as well as at the Great Berlin Art Exhibitions in 1913 and 1960. In 1960 Paul Kuhfuss was awarded with the 'Großer Kunstpreis'.
