Kupka as one of the fathers of abstract art and is to be mentioned in the same breath as Kandinsky, Mondrian and Balla, whereas the Prague-born artist found his own individual way into abstraction. Color always played an essential role for Kupka. Thus he has dealt with the theme of color theory in many of his works and philosophically and scientifically explored the nature of color and its effect on a work of art. The sheet is in overall good condition with fresh colors. The paper is slightly time stained due to age. The lower margin shows a short tear (approx. 1 cm) in the center, the right margin a tiny tear (approx. 1 mm), further a tiny tear (approx. 3 mm) at the upper margin on the left. On the verso there are narrow remains of mounting along the upper margin. The work is signed 'Kupka' lower left. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 47 x 39.5 cm, the sheet size is 22.5 x 15.2 cm. František Kupka (1871-1957) František Kupka first studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and then at the Vienna Academy where he was a student of Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach and August Eisenmenger. In 1895 he settled in Paris, where he gained recognition as a cartoonist and illustrator. Around 1910 he made the acquaintance of Marcel Duchamp, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger and Francis Picabia, an encounter which sustainably influenced Kupka's work. As one of the first artists in France, he abandoned Art Nouveau in favor of abstraction. Kupka exhibited his abstract works for the first time in 1912 at the Autumn Salon. In 1931 he was along with Hans Arp, Jean Hélion and others one of the founding members of the group 'Abstraction-Création'. The artist's first major retrospective was organized in Prague in 1946, in 1955 he was represented at the documenta I in Kassel. František Kupka is considered one of the fathers of abstraction. His works are held by major museum collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Guggenheim Museum and the MoMA in New York as well as the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. His diverse oeuvre is an inspiration for contemporary generations of artists.
