(Pennsylvania/Germany, 1815-1872)Floral Still Life, circa 1870, signed lower right with conjoined monogram "SR", oil on canvas, 29-5/8 x 23-1/2 in.; fine modern gilt wood and composition frame and spandrel, lined, restretched on new stretcher, two periods of retouch with portion of signature touched out, retouch at edges and at areas rubbed by former spandrels, trimmed within feigned spandrel. Notes: Authenticated by Judith Hansen O'Toole of the Westmoreland Museum and accompanied by letter dated April 10, 1996. Her conclusion states, "It should be noted that Roesen painted a much greater number of fruit pieces than floral, making the latter more rare. The size and quality of your painting makes it an important example of the artist's work." She also notes the "unusual inclusion" of the hollyhocks amidst Roesen's other favored flowers..
