Ryder/171-W. 12th St. N.Y.C. on an old label attached to the backboard Oil on canvas 25 1/8 x 30 1/8 inches Provenance: Private collection This painting dates from the years 1901 to 1907, which Chauncey Foster Ryder spent in France. There he studied at the Academie Julian in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens and Raphael Colin and developed a friendship with the American artist Max Bohm, whose dramatic, moody style influenced his work. Ryder also spent time in the town of Etaples. Ryder first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1903 and thereafter showed every year during his sojourn, including 1907, when he received an honorable mention. Ryder showed a work with this title in the 20th Annual Exhibition of Watercolors, Pastels, and Miniatures at the Art Institute of Chicago, Apr. 28-Jun. 7, 1908. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
