He became a celebrated interpreter of New England scenery, working in a Tonalist style characterized by harmonious colors, richly layered pigments and dynamic brushwork. Probably painted in the vicinity of his country house in Wilton, Connecticut, Pines on the Hillside underscores Ryder's reputation as an artist who was always "lyrical and poetic in his approach."
