Filippo de Pisis (1896-1956) A native of Ferrara, Filippo de Pisis (originally Luigi Tibertelli) is considered one of the most important Italian painters of the 20th Century. In 1917, he met Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carrà and Alberto Savinio, who were among the founding members of the 'metaphysical painting'. He decided to become a painter during his stay in Rome between 1920 and 1925. From 1925 to 1939, he lived in Paris. There he studied the French painting of the 19th Century, Impressionism, and contemporary painting. He painted street scenes, mainly depicting the life of 'common' people. In addition, de Pisis painted numerous still lifes. In 1939, he turned to Italy, living first in Milan, then in Venice. He took part in the documenta in Kassel in 1955, where his works were also posthumously shown in 1964. Today, his works are found in numerous international museums, including in Turin, Ravenna, Trento, Ferrara, Rome, Venice, São Paulo, and Ljubljana.
