Oil on thick cardboard Austria, around 1935 Alfons Walde (1891-1958) - Austrian painter Signed lower right 'A. Walde' Old Walde studio label with the title 'Bergweiler' on the back In the original Walde frame Overall dimensions, framed: 83.3 x 84.1 cm Dimensions of the cardboard: 48 x 69 cm Very good condition Provenance: private collection (acquired from Galerie Hassfurther in the early 1990s) The large-scale summer motif by the Kitzbühel 'Malerfürst' Alfons Walde features an incredible range of colours and plasticity; the auction record for one of his works is around 580,000 Euro This expressive painting by Alfons Walde titled 'Bergweiler' [mountain village] shows a summery view of the village of Waidring with the Lofer Mountains in the background. The subject matter exhibits an outstanding color brilliance and dynamism within the composition. The viewer himself seems to be standing on the balcony of one of these huts taking in the breathtaking scenery. The blue of the sky dominates, like in Walde's winter landscapes, the top of the painting. It seems as if one can breathe the fresh mountain air. The chalets and their surroundings are depicted with a free, pastose brushwork; the red geraniums on the balcony railing seem as if sculpted - one wants to pick them. The surfaces and volumes have a sculptural quality; the mountain range appears almost amorphous in shape. But even though the forms are partially abstracted, the authentic character of the Tyrolean summer pasture is not lost. The dynamic emerges from the human figure in motion and the shadows it creates. Two peasant women in traditional dresses are depicted in the foreground. Their faces, only roughly sketched, seem animated but they also appear, like all characters in Walde's work, in unison with the nature that surrounds them. The qualities that collectors value in the paintings by the Austrian artist from Kitzbühel - the mountains, the snow - are also present in this work. The Lofer Mountains, a recurring motif in Walde's oeuvre, majestically throne in the background. Noteworthy are also the original Walde frame and the studio label inscribed 'Alfons Walde - Kitzbühel, Tirol, Austria' on the back. The painting by Alfons Walde is in very good condition and in its original frame, created by the artist. The frame shows only minimal signs of age and wear. On the back of the board there is an old studio label with the title of the work 'Bergweiler'. The work is signed lower right 'A. Walde'. There are some framing marks, especially along the upper margin, where there are also a few minor colour flakes. Along the border there are two tiny pin holes, hidden by the frame. Framed the painting measures 83.3 x 84.1 cm. The cardboard measures 48 x 69 cm. Alfons Walde (1891-1958) Alfons Walde was born in Tyrol in 1891. Already in secondary school he showed his artistic talent with expressionist drawings. He studied architecture at the Technical University of Vienna and painted farm houses, fields and gardens. His early work recalls the art of the Vienna Secession, influenced by Klimt and Schiele. In 1913 Walde's paintings were exhibited at the Secession. During the First World War the artist served in Tyrol and Bosnia. Then he returned to Vienna and continued his studies before settling in Kitzbühel. From 1920 onwards he exhibited his works mainly in Vienna. Walde primarily portrayed scenes from rural life and landscapes - his Alpine motifs are nowadays highly sought after by collectors. But today his nude studies also form a significant part of his oeuvre. In 1923, Walde founded his own publishing company and marketed his oil paintings in the form of posters and postcards. He became primarily known for his posters from the 1920s and 30s, advertising Tyrol as a hub for winter sports. From 1946 onwards he dedicated himself predominantly to architecture. Many of Alfons Walde's works are now in the Museum Kitzbühel.
