Watercolour and pencil sketch on chamois-coloured wove paper with truncated watermark "MILL.18 [...]" 12.7 x 17.7 cm, framed under glass. Signed 'H E. Cross' in pencil lower left. - Lined with thin Japan paper and mounted with white paper tape under the mat showing the full image. The watercolour is known to Patrick Offenstadt, Paris; we would like to thank him for his confirmatory information Provenance Private collection, Belgium According to kind information by Patrick Offenstadt, the main entrance of the World Fair in Paris was created by René Binet and reached a height of 45 m. Flanked by two minarets, the gigantic archway was crowned by a female figure symbolizing the city of Paris and welcoming the visitors to the World Fair.
