Robert Bruce Crane American, 1857-1937 Winter Landscape, Twilight Signed BRUCE CRANE ANA (lr) Oil on canvas 25 x 30 1/8 inches Unframed Provenance: Association of the Graduates of the Columbia Chapter of the Alpha Delta Phi, New York, circa 1930 This intensely luminous evening scene by Bruce Crane is easily dated due to the form of signature used on the painting. Crane became an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1897, and was admitted as an Academician in 1901, after which he would have adopted the abbreviation NA as opposed to the form employed here. In 1898 the artist showed a piece entitled Winter Night at the Academy (no. 320), which may possibly have been the present work. In 1901 Crane received the first Inness Gold Medal awarded in an Academy annual exhibition, a factor that may have contributed to his election to Academician that spring. C
