Bruce Crane American, 1857-1937 Late Fall, 1914 Signed BRUCE CRANE NA and dated 1914 (lr) Oil on canvas 20 x 26 inches Provenance: Private collection Featuring a serene pasture at a transitional time of year, in which sparse trees and a ground covered with fallen leaves are suffused in a golden atmospheric glow, Late Fall is a quintessential Tonalist painting. The richly impastoed surface, through which landscape elements seem to subtly become present, draws the viewer into a contemplative experience. Such an effect was intended by Crane, who used sketches made in the outdoors for studio paintings in which he secured his effects "through a conscious elimination of whatever of the realism of nature interferes with the composition of his atmospheric poem." (Art in America, 1926) Crane, who was born in New York City and studied with Alexander Wyant and in Paris, rendered this painting during the years that he lived in Bronxville, New York, from 1910 until the end of his life.
