The varnish has yellowed significantly, the painting shows extensive crazing and some colour losses. The frame shows traces of age and use as well as some chipping. The canvas is signed lower right with "E. Merker Mchn." The dimensions are 76 x 96 cm (framed) and 66 x 86 cm (canvas). Erich Mercker (1891-1973) Trained as a construction engineer Erich Mercker began to turn to painting as an autodidact in 1915. In the following years, he made several trips to Scandinavia, France, Italy and Austria. During this period he painted numerous landscapes in an Impressionist style, painted with a palette-knife. As an industrial painter, he worked from 1945 especially for large companies such as MAN, Volkswagen and Bayer.
