Aaron Harry Gorson American, 1872-1933 Hudson River Scene Signed A. H. Gorson (lr) Oil on canvas laid to panel 25 x 30 inches Unframed Provenance: The artist Mr. George Taber, Pittsburgh, PA By descent to Mr. Philip Taber (his son), 1939, WA By descent in the family to private collection, Seattle, WA, 1954 Known primarily for his dynamic nocturnal images of the factories of Pittsburgh in the early twentieth century, Gorson also focused his attention on the scenery of the Hudson River after moving to New York City in 1921. Drawing on the pastoral tradition in this depiction, he created a lyrical and picturesque image in which a steamboat and its smoke do not disrupt the peaceful feeling of nightfall approaching on the river. The silvery grays and lavender-blues create a harmony of tone in the mode of Whistler, an important influence on Gorson. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
