Gorson (ll) Oil on canvas 18 x 39 7/8 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist Born in Kovno, Lithuania, Gorson came to America in 1888. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Paris, Gorson moved to Pittsburgh in 1903. There he became the pre-eminent painter of industrial Pittsburgh. Although Gorson would not move permanently to New York until 1921, he visited and painted the city during his years in Pittsburgh. New York Skyline, a view of Lower Manhattan from the Hudson River, was created about 1908-9; the tallest structure in the painting may be identified as the Singer Building (completed in 1908; destroyed during the 1960s). By 1910, the taller Woolworth Building had been erected and would have been seen in this view. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
