Love Galleries, Inc., Chicago Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Over 100 Years of New York City in Art, Jan. 10 - Feb. 28, 2004 Cooper's oeuvre includes many depictions of architectural monuments in Europe and the Far East, but his fame derives primarily from his views of urban skyscrapers in Philadelphia, Chicago, and especially New York, where he resided from 1904 to 1921. Like other artists who emphasized the verticality of the "new New York," Cooper was drawn to the Woolworth Building, designed by Cass Gilbert, which was the tallest building in the world at 792 feet, when it was completed in 1913. Cornoyer chose to depict it as seen through the central arch of the Municipal Building, designed by McKim, Mead, and White and built 1907-14 on Centre Street. The shadowed arch of the Neoclassical building housing governmental offices frames the sunlit skyscraper, accentuating its association with the Gothic Cathedral and expressing a sense of America's ascendancy in the early twentieth century. Using Impressionist handling, Cornoyer conveyed a sense of immediacy, the skyscraper coming into view as we move forward, the tiny figures and trees in the distance imparting a sense of the building's dramatic scale.
