Palace of Fine Arts and reflecting pool, Panama Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, circa 1915, signed lower right: Colin Campbell Cooper, oil on canvas, 14'' H x 24'' W, est: $15,000/25,000. Note: The present work is a previously unknown example from the series of Palace of Fine Arts paintings Cooper executed about 1915. The scene is painted to showcase the pastel hues of the Palace's architecture in bright, natural sunlight. Cooper incorporates into the composition sculptural details around and in the reflecting pond, dancing reflections on the water's surface, and even some geese and a duck. According to Dr. Deborah Solon in her essay ''Cooper in California and Beyond'', ''[T]he one building that Cooper revisited in various iterations was the Palace of Fine Arts?.The profusely decorated Palace of Fine Arts was constructed to be viewed under different lighting conditions; Cooper, in fact, painted it under both natural and artificial illumination....Cooper's virtuoso handling of full sunlight and shadow on water and the impact of the pastel color scheme are especially resonant'' (W.H. Gerdts & D.E. Solon, ''East Coast / West Coast and Beyond: Colin Campbell Copper - American Impressionist'', Laguna Beach, CA, 2006, pp. 87-88).
