Portrait of Charles IX, King of France (1550–1574), c. 1570–1580 or later, attributed to Pierre Dumonstier, his circle or follower. Subject: A bearded man wearing a richly detailed ruff, doublet, and a hat with an ornamental band. A prominent, almost flamboyant earring with a pearl or drop. Delicate black and red chalk on laid paper, with light touches of color (especially in the lips and mustache), and subtle shading in graphite.
