This drawing in brown ink with a grey blue wash shows great finesse. The expansive panorama captures the bustling maritime life of the Venetian lagoon. Two large merchant vessels dominate the foreground, their sails dramatically filled with wind, while smaller gondolas and fishing boats cross the waters. In the distance, the skyline of Venice unfolds in delicate linear strokes, with the unmistakable silhouette of the Campanile of San Marco rising above a forest of masts. The composition is anchored on the right by a rustic villa and garden perched above the shoreline, balancing the maritime spectacle with a sense of domestic quietude. The draughtsman’s controlled yet lively pen work, animated by subtle grey wash, recalls the atmospheric vedute of Francesco Guardi ( 1712-1793) who produced several similar works in the 17770-1790. The Guardi style (18th c.) was rooted in Venetian vedute and capricci, characterized by looser brushwork, atmospheric light, and poetic interpretation compared to the crisp realism of Canaletto. By the 19th century, draftsmen often carried forward Guardi’s influence, especially in romanticized architectural views and Venetian scenery. The drawing here, has to be placed in that context. A marvelous piece of art.
