Francesco Lazzaro Guardi (1712-1793). Pen and wash on paper. Image size approx. 9" x 9.5", faintly signed "Guardi" at lower right. Impeccable provenance with the following catalogue entry from a January 29th 1914 catalogue in which the "LeonHirsh Estate" was sold by the American Art Association, New York. In the catalog, this was lot #4 and described as the following. Titled "By The Water", between double corinthian columns at left and right, surmounting stone walls connectedby a low arched bridge, in the distance a single sailboat with two men aboard, under a clear sky with light gray summer clouds. Wonderful Venetian study. Back of frame is marked "From the Collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Filchett Marshand Richard Cosway". Wonderful trail of ownership. Incredible piece.
