Johann Nepomuk Franz Xaver Strixner (1782 Altötting - 1855 Munich) after Annibale Carracci (1560 Bologna - 1609 Rom): Flight into Egypt, incunabulum of lithography, Winkler No 965, 474, 1811-1816, c. 1811, Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: Signed at the bottom: "H: Carracci // N: Strixner del: 1813.", listed in Winkler: Die Frühzeit der Deutschen Lithographie, No. 965, 47.4 / Dussler p.151 No. XLVII, 4. Munich 1811-16. In a beautiful landscape in front of a lake with sailing boats and with a mountain background Mary, the Child and Joseph are walking to the left behind a piece of grass. In the left background under two trees a flute player and a listener. The flight into Egypt is an event from Jesus' childhood, described in the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 2,13). Date: c. 1811 Description: "The reproduction of grandiose pen drawings for the "Oeuvres Lithographiques" made demands on Nepomuk Strixner's skills. Simple tracing work did not do justice to the pen stroke. The works shown here can only have been created freely over the tracing after great practice." (from: Winkler, plates 20-21).
