Ink on paper Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824-1904) Signed in ink lower right 'J. Gérôme' Sheet dimensions: 4 5/8 x 6 7/8 in. (11.7 x 19.8 cm.) This drawing by Jean-Léon Gérôme is a careful study of a lioness laying in a relaxed pose with her rear legs crossed. The lioness, rendered in ink with great detail, has a fine outline and cross-hatched shading. The ink drawing is signed "J. Gérôme" directly below the lioness. Laid to backing board; 2 horizontal creases along upper and lower 3rd; staining along upper crease; yellowing to paper; dime-sized discoloration left of animal; other various areas of discoloration throughout; 2 pin-sized stains above the image and to the right of image. Jean- Léon Gérôme (French, 1824-1904) The French painter and sculptor, Jean-Léon Gérôme was born at Vesoul in 1824. Known as a French Academic artist, Gérôme crafted his skills painting historical genre scenes, mythological and Orientalist scenes. The culmination of these differing scenes brought the Academic painting tradition to an artistic climax. His paintings have been exhibited at museums world-wide, including the Musée d'Orsay, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Arts Institute of Chicago, National Gallery and the J. Paul Getty Museum.
