Franz Liszt (1811-1886) Signed autograph letter by the greatest Hungarian composer, dating to the time when he was teaching in Budapest, Rome and Weimar. He writes to the celebrated realist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), painter of a Golgotha (Golgotha Consummatum est, 1867, oil on canvas, Paris Musée d'Orsay), whom Listz considered to be a source of sublime inspiration for his own work. "Elle m'ément profondément, et en admirant l'oeuvre de votre gènie, mon âme prie à l'ombre de la croiz rédemptrice, ou de révéle toujours le salat de l'humanité. Votre tableau est un trascendant poéme symbolique". 8vo., pp. 2, dated Weimar 27 luglio 1876. There is a note at the lower edge of the signature: "Les photographies que vous avez en la bonté de joindre au Golgotha me sont fort précieuses...".
