David Roberts, RA (British, 1796-1864) A street scene in Brescia, Lombardy signed lower left with initials "DR" watercolour h:18 w: 12 cm Provenance: Bought at Sotheby's, London, 17 February 1965, from the collection of Sir Bruce Ingram, lot 690 (£25). From the collection of Arthur Stanley Oswald Literature: James Ballentine, Life of David Roberts, 1866 - "Roberts visited Brescia on his way from Milan to Verona and thence to Venice in October 1851". J M W Turner persuaded David Roberts to become a full time artist. During his life Roberts travelled extensively in Egypt and the Far East. In 1851 and again in 1853 Roberts travelled in Italy, painting in Rome, Venice and Brescia. His last volume of illustrations, Italy, Classical, Historical and Picturesque, was published in 1859
