ROBERTS DAVID: (1796-1864) Scottish Orientalist Painter. A.L.S., David Roberts, two pages, 8vo, Fitzroy Square, 28th November 1862, to William Carpenter. Roberts writes following a chance meeting with his correspondent when he 'begged your acceptance of my poor etchings' and remarks 'I never contemplated there being worthy [of] The collection of The British Museum', further continuing 'Your judgement, and long experience with artists etchings prompted me to make the offer, judge therefore of my surprise on receiving a formal vote of thanks in the name of the Trustees, as a Donor? Well of course the honour is the greater from being unforseen.' In concluding Roberts writes 'But as I intended them for your own private collection, pray let me send you another set as I have a few more left. Or do you care about them?' VG William Hookham Carpenter (1792-1866) British Keeper of Prints at the British Museum.
