It depicts an expressive composition of the artist's mature creative period. The artist of Danish descent is considered one of the most important exponents of the German Informel. He is known for his own, 'timeless' style, which sometimes also becomes figural. The present dynamic and meditative work is reminiscent of the Action Painting and the artistic movement of the ZEN 49 group. Sonderborg himself rejected any interpretation about his works and only indicated when and where they were made. The paper is signed and dated in pencil lower right, 'Sonderborg 87', and mounted on cardboard. The work is overall in very good condition. The paper is lightly yellowed and shows some minor handling marks. The cardboard is slightly soiled in one point in the right margin. The overall dimensions, framed, are 67.5 x 58.5 cm. The paper is 41 x 29.3 cm in size. K.R.H. Sonderborg (1923-2008) Born in Denmark, the painter K.R.H. Sonderborg (Kurt Rudolf Hoffmann) is considered a major artist of the German Informel. Despite the art historical association with this movement, the artist preserved his own style. From 1965 to 1990, Sonderborg was professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. From 1969 to 1970, he was a visiting professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and in 1986, a visiting professor at the Art Institute in Chicago.
