Attributed to Charles-Antoine Bridan (French, 1730-1808). "Assumption of the Virgin." Late 18th century. Terracotta sculptural group depicting the Virgin Mary ascending amid swirling clouds, supported by angels and cherubs, her arms raised in exaltation. The composition is animated by deeply undercut drapery and dynamic movement characteristic of late 18th-century French devotional sculpture. Circa 17681772. Mounted on a carved Italian wood base, 16th century. 17". Condition: Abrasions, loss, breaks, and cracks in base. Provenance: Study for the main altarpiece at Chartres Cathedral in Chartres, France.
