작품 상세

JOHN ROGERS (AMERICAN, 1839-1904) "PHOTOGRAPHER AND SITTER" PLASTER STATUE GROUPING, LOT OF TWO, cast-plaster with a patinated surface, depicting a photographer standing beside a large early camera, he holds a toy in his left hand to keep the child's interest, the other statue in the grouping depicts a mother and child, the latter of which is seated on a detailed Classical table with a squirrel, owl, and birds on its pedestal base. Each are impressed "JOHN ROGERS / NEW YORK. / 1878" on their round bases. Dated 1878. Male figure 18 1/2" HOA, 8 1/2" D base. Catalogue Note: It is theorized among collectors that the photographer shown here was posed by Mathew Brady (1822-1896) and that the sitters are his wife and child. This may be purely romanticized.  This pair was one of only two pairs of figures made by Rogers. This pair, of smaller scale than many of his other groups, was intended to sit at either end of a mantelpiece.
