Through an emphasis on aesthetics, social influence, and the physical relationship of design to a city he has revolutionized a forward-thinking practice. His extraordinary body of work, which stretches back to the founding of his firm in 1962, questions the ability of the field to incorporate innovative design, technology, and materiality into a building’s expressive potential. Untitled (Hong Kong IX) belongs to Gehry’s Fish Lamps series, an animated, dynamic group of light sculptures dating to 1984. In addition to his unparalleled architectural output, he has always experimented with other forms of design, including sculpture and furniture. He applies the inventive, non traditional fabrication components of his architectural practice to these explorations, including corrugated cardboard, bentwood, and a plastic laminate known as ColorCore. After breaking a piece of the ColorCore in his studio he was influenced by the shards, which reminded him of fish scales. The original works in this series included handcrafted wire skeletons moulded into life-like animal shapes with ColorCore shards individually glued onto the surface. The implied movement of the fish lamps mirrored the sleek, curvilinear forms for which Gehry is known, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California. Untitled (Hong Kong IX) evolves beyond the fish leitmotif to portray a largescale alligator with an intricate layering of jagged ColorCore scales. The sculpture exudes character and whimsy to simulate the sly and vigorous movement of the animal while the diffused warm light imbues the creature with an organic presence.
