Bernhard Hoetger (1874-1949) Born in today’s Dortmund, Bernhard Hoetger trained as a stonecutter in Detmold from 1888-1892, and then went on peregrination. From 1895 to 1897, he worked as a technical director for a workshop for religious art in Wiedenbrück. He then studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy as a student of Karl Janssen. From 1900 to 1907, he lived in Paris and settled there inspired by Maillol and Rodin, which eventually led him to Expressionism. In 1906, he met Paula Modersohn-Becker. In 1909, Hoetger was appointed to the Darmstadt artists' colony and named for professor. In 1913, he maintained three studios in Fischerhude near Bremen, and in 1914 he moved to Worpswede. He opened the ‘Kaffee Worpswede’, where he exhibited his works of art. In the Third Reich his art was eventually denounced as ‘degenerate’. From 1934, he lived in Berlin, from where he fled to Switzerland in 1943. Hoetger was a member of the Deutsche Künstlerbund. His most famous works are the redesign of the Bremen Böttcherstraße and the house Atlantis - an expressionistic masterpiece.
