His early works are influenced by the futuristic woks of Filippo Tommaso of Marinetti. Of prime importance is his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1922. Here, he is continuously represented in the coming years until 1942. Numerous travels take him between 1927/30 in the most important European museums, where he studied classical sculptures. Messina figurative style is based on the ancient, sculpture. On the other hand, he alludes to the sculpture of the 15th century, especially in the Florentine style. He ranks among the most important exponent of the Novecento Italiano, and is represented with large sculptures in public space.
