The creative process and the handling of the hands of the artist are still visible in this sculpture. Francesco Messina is one of the most important representatives of figurative art of the Italian art movement Novecento, which rejected European avant-garde and wished to revive the great periods of Italian art of the 1400s and 1500s. Condition: The sculpture is in very good condition. It is mounted on a white marble base (with attachments of green marble). The dimensions of the sculpture are 52.5 x 14.5 x 41 cm. The marble base measures 10 x 22.5 x 22.5 cm. Francesco Messina (1900-1995) Francesco Messina's creativity was mainly shaped by his membership in the Italian artist group Novecento. He became the director of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (1936-1944) and the emeritus of the Accademia d'Italia (1943). He was awarded the Prize for Sculpture of the Venice Biennale (1942). Great figurative works are among others the monuments for Pius II in St. Peter's Basilica and for Pius XI at Milan Cathedral, as well as the Sala Borgia of the Vatican Gallery of Paulus VI. The city of Milan opened a museum and a studio for him, where he was able to work and which hosts most of his works today.
