Ferdinand Spindel (1913-1980) Ferdinand Spindel apprenticed as a graphic artist at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen at Max Buchartz and worked as a self-employed artist since 1947. Spindel was a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund sinde 1957. In 1963, he joined the artist residence Halfmannshof in Gelsenkirchen. It was that same year when Spindel discovered foam as his primary artistic means of expression and destroyed the majority of the work he had created until then. He experimented with foam objects, foam reliefs and foam rooms. Spindel was in contact with the artist group Zero. In 1969, he was among the founders of the artist group B1.
