His sculptures show an edgy and geometrized abstraction, featuring a completely new way of expression in the field of portrait sculpture. Berlin as a place of international modernism around the First World War was the appropriate place to present different artistic styles. Besides the here depicted actor and writer Rudolf Blümner (1873-1945), Wauer belonged to the close circle of visitors to the ‘Sturm’ gallery. Condition: The bronze is in very good condition, showing some minor abrasion of the patina and superficial scratches. The height is circa 59 cm. William Wauer (1866-1962) From 1884 to 1887, William Wauer studied at the art academies in Dresden and Berlin, then in Munich. He continued his education in San Francisco, New York and Leipzig. Afterwards, he worked as an art critic and editor, then as a theater director in Berlin. From 1913, he made movies. In 1918, he exhibited for the first time his own sculptures at the 61st exhibition at the gallery ‘Der Sturm’. In the 1920s, Wauer was also involved in the Bauhaus by Walter Gropius. In 1924, he founded the International Association of ‘Expressionists, Cubists, Futurists and Constructivists’ (later ‘Abstracts’). In the Third Reich, Wauer was prohibited to expose his works. After the war, he worked as a lecturer in West Berlin. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
