Asiru Olatunde (Nigerian, 1918-1993), 'Osogbo Panel', c.1960s, repoussé copper, inscribed 'ASIRU OLATUNDE OSOGBO', 61 x 91cm Provenance: Acquired in Nigeria directly from the artist in the late 1960s. Asiru Olatunde started out as a blacksmith, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. In 1961, he began crafting animal figures using recycled copper and aluminium which, over time, developed into a distinctive repoussé technique applied to copper and aluminium panels. His works feature narratives inspired by Yoruba oral traditions, Biblical stories reimagined in Nigerian contexts, and depictions of everyday life.
