Repussé aluminum panel Nigeria, c. 1960 Asiru Olatunde (1918-1993) – Nigerian artist Dimensions: 51 x 124 cm Good condition Provenance: Collection Klaus Stephan (1927-2002) Characteristic repoussé relief with a depiction of Fulani shepherds and their flock The relief was part of the collection of Klaus Stephan (1927-2002), who was the Africa correspondent of the ARD (broadcaster) in the 1960s and a frequent TV presenter in the German news program. Condition: The relief is in good condition with small traces of age and wear. The aluminum panel measures 51 x 124 cm. Asiru Olatunde (1918-1993) Like his father and grandfather, Asiru Olatunde was trained as a blacksmith. In 1961 he began to create his first figures of animals out of recycled copper and aluminium that resulted in his unique repoussé technique on aluminium panels. His subjects include narratives drawn from Yoruba oral tradition, Bible stories set in Nigerian settings and scenes from everyday life.
