This is an original work of art colored engraving by George Catlin (1796-1882) from the, "Illustrations of the Manners, Customs, & Conditions of the North Ameircan Indians with letters and notes, Written during EightYears fo Travel and Adventure Among the Wildest and most Remarkable Tribes Now Existing. by George Catlin." This was printed in London by Chatto & Windus, Piccadilly 1876. The engraving shows plate number 9 & 10with the top showing a Buffalo charging the western hunter and the bottom showing the Great American Bison. The entire page measures 6 3/8"x9 7/8" George Catlin was the first artist to observe the tribes of thePlains Indians and to illustrate their habits and customs from first-hand observation. His belief in the "noble savage", unspoiled by contact with the outside world, sustained him as he crossed and re-crossed the country -from the Mississippi to the Rockies - gathering raw material for his Indian Gallery.
