This is an original work of art colored engraving by George Catlin (1796-1882) from the, "Illustrations of the Manners, Customs, & Conditions of the North Ameircan Indians with letters and notes, Written during EightYears fo Travel and Adventure Among the Wildest and most Remarkable Tribes Now Existing. by George Catlin." This was printed in London by Chatto & Windus, Piccadilly 1876. The engraving shows plate number 289that features a Native American Warrior holding a peace pipe and warrior shield. The entire page measures 6 3/8"x9 7/8" George Catlin was the first artist to observe the tribes of the Plains Indians and toillustrate their habits and customs from first-hand observation. His belief in the "noble savage", unspoiled by contact with the outside world, sustained him as he crossed and re-crossed the country - from theMississippi to the Rockies - gathering raw material for his Indian Gallery.
