• FELIKS TOPOLSKI, R.A., (1907-1989) PROCESSION OF THE ORDER OF THE GARTER mixed media on paper 20.0 x 12.5cm / 7 3/4 x 5in Topolski frequently recorded the ceremonial processions of his day, most notably when he was commissioned to paint a monumental mural of the coronation processions of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, which is now in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace. He also sketched the wedding of H.R.H. Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer (a number of these sketches were sold at Bonhams, Oxford, 12.06.2013, Lots 35-37). The present work shows the procession of the Order of the Garter, an event which takes place annually in June at Windsor Castle. The Order is the most senior and oldest of the Orders of Chivalry in the United Kingdom, and the procession is one of the great spectacles of pageantry in England. The main figure in the present work may perhaps be George V or Edward, Duke of Windsor.
