Mathematician.- Gregory (Olinthus, mathematician, 1774-1841) Autograph Letter signed to "My dear Sir", 3pp., sm. 4to, Royal Military Academy [Woolwich], 11th October 1837, on behalf of James Hann applying for the post of mathematical master at King's College, London, "I venture to write you a short and confidential... letter, in reference to Mr. Hann... . He has just been giving me an account of the difficulties which stand in the way of his appointment in your Institution, by reason of his conscientious inability to declare himself a member of the Church of England", folds, address panel partially inked out; and another, an engraved portrait of Gregory, v.s., v.d. (2). *** James Hann (1799-1856), mechanical engineer and mathematician. "He worked closely with Olinthus Gregory in the production of astronomical and other scientific computations. Hann had been brought up a Roman Catholic but had changed his allegiance to the Church of England some time before 1837, when he moved along the Strand to become a master at King's College School, a post which required conformity to the doctrines of the established church." - Oxford DNB.
