SERIES OF NINE AUTOGRAPH AND THREE TYPED LETTERS SIGNED, TO SIR GERALD KELLY, WITH WHOM HE SERIES OF NINE AUTOGRAPH AND THREE TYPED LETTERS SIGNED, TO SIR GERALD KELLY, WITH WHOM HE 800--1,200 GBP dating from a few days after his election as President of the Royal Academy ("...Since it has fallen on me I want you all to be good friends of mine..."), discussing Academy business, the sale of a Gainsborough landscape, and an exhibition of his works at Wolverhampton, berating the Arts Council ("...We of the R.A. are our own masters...The mere fact of a council meeting in the offing would cramp the style of any Genius...") and art students ("...No ideas about painting or anything. No Tradition. Piccasso & Matisse seem to be in some of their skulls..."), and denouncing the choices of a buyer of art for an American museum ...you'd have had a fit right away! She has had £5000 sent her from America to purchase some things...This lot she's bought including Paul Nash & others is supposed to be representative of British art of today!!...Think of buying Cedric Morris when there are such good paintings as Flowers on a piano by Ruskin Spear...This is a farce... including two pen-and-ink sketches, one a self-portrait of "The freedom loving P.P.R.A.", drawn immediately after resigning from the Presidency, and a full-page sketch, signed, with a caption referring to Kelly taking his place; 26 pages in all, 4to and 8vo, the full-page sketch with caption framed and glazed, The Grange, Withypool, The Royal Academy and Castle House, Dedham, 20 March 1944 to 11 October 1957
