Stories of heroes, historical events, and romance are themes commonly featured in Chinese opera. Painted with refined strokes, the beautiful female lead is poised in character, exuding a feminine and seductive attitude. Depicted in intricate details, the artist places strong focus on the embroidered costume with floral motifs and hand gestures. Architectural elements, subtle effects of light and rich colours unite to create a dynamic atmosphere. Lui studied at the Kuala Lumpur College of Art from 1987-1989. His early solos were As I Was Passing (Hotel Istana, organised by Pelita Hati), Our Heritage (Rusli Hashim Fine Art, 2001), As I Was Passing II (Galeri Citra, 2006), Circles: Nostalgia and Collective Memory (White Box Publika, 2014). This was followed by eleven consecutive solos with PINKGUY Gallery, the latest being, Taste in August 2021. He had a record of sorts in his Redeem solo exhibition at PINKGUY in 2014 when all 12 works were sold within 18 minutes of opening!
