Born in Catalonia, Spain in 1929, Juvenal Sanso moved to the Philippines at the age of five. During the Second World War, the fortunes of the Sanso family took a bad turn and seeing the city of Manila devastated, the young Sanso was severely traumatized, the psychological scars becoming the central theme of his early works. These so-called Black Period paintings - where he started by blackening out canvases before applying color, the effect of which would be quite dramatic, as in Blue Hortencias - would later also be appreciated as examples of Sanso's "poetic surrealism."
