Satsuma ceramic with over-glaze enamel and gold gilt Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912) Signed underside on a black cartouche ‘Ryokuzan’ Squared form bowl is ornamented with painting panels and lavishly painted ground The interior of the bowl is two panels of paintings, each shaped in a fan and kidney form Depicted in each panel is a festive figural scene Ornately decorated ground, highlighted with dark indigo florets Width x Height: 4 ¼ x 2 ¼ in (1.8 x 5.7 cm) Good condition Of an unconventional form: deeply potted with squared edge. All figures are in a noble household, and engaged in either outdoor or indoor pursuits. Along with the panels, featuring every scene in detail, the ground of the bowl is also remarkably decorated. The rim is bordered with a geometrical patterned band and foot rim is adorned with scarlet red and indigo blue florets. Signed ‘Dai Nippon, Ryokuzan ga’ on a recessed underside.
