작품 상세

Ink on stretched canvas. 1962, signed “Souza 62, Bombay. 1962 This image, painted with an inkbrush, shows an entirely naked woman sitting, her hair full, looking at us. At her feet is another, clothed, female figure, tending to one of the woman’s feet on her lap. At both women’s feet are a pot, bowl and presumably a mirror. Some further details such as the pedicurists’ eyes, clothing decoration and hair are painted ochre-brown. This drawing is intended to depict the biblical scene known as Bathsheba at her Bath, from the Second Book of Samuel, a scene also painted by Rembrandt and van Haarlem, among others. With his very freely inspired brush, Souza places this impressively vivid scene directly in front of our eyes.Souza was an Indian artist and co-founder of the Progressive Artists’ Group in Bombay. He was born into a Catholic family in Saligao, Goa. In 1949 he moved to London, where he initially worked as a journalist. In 1955 an exhibition of his work was held in the “Gallery One” in London – it sold out. From this point on his success as an artist skyrocketed. In 1967 he moved to New York. In 2008 one of his paintings achieved a record price of 2.5 million dollars at an auction held by Christie’s. In 2010 the same house held a successful auction with 140 of the artist’s works – with some pieces attaining considerably higher results. Today, works by Souza are located in a number of illustrious museums across the world (British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum in London etc.) Expertise: Wolfmar Zacken Sohel Chawla was a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great commitment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
